On 30th May, the 419th Shaheedi Diwas of Guru Arjan Dev Ji was observed with deep respect and devotion by the Sikh community. Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the 5th Sikh Guru and the compiler of the Adi Granth, was martyred in 1606 for offering support to Prince Khusrau, son of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. His defiance against the Mughal authority led to his torture and martyrdom in Lahore, where he was made to sit on a burning hot plate while boiling sand was poured over him. This sacrifice continues to hold immense emotional and spiritual significance for the Sikh community.
As part of the observance, various religious activities took place across the country. Families set up stalls of ‘Chabeel’—sweet rose milk—to offer to the public, and Gurudwaras held Kirtan sessions, reciting Shabads associated with Guruji’s life and teachings. One such significant event was held at Gurudwara Guru Nanak Nagar in Shyam Nagar, Raipur, where students from Anahad Music Academy participated in a Kirtan performance.
These students, enrolled in regular music classes at Anahad Music Academy, had been preparing for nearly a month. They began by learning to play the Shabads on the harmonium, followed by vocal training to synchronize their singing with the instrument. Later, they practiced along with tabla taals using online resources. Their dedication resulted in a soulful performance in front of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, paying homage to the first martyr of India.
The Shabads performed included:
Saas Saas Simro Gobind
Pawan Mai Pawan Satguru Hoye Dhayal
Tatti Waho Na Lagai
Meri Preet Gobind
Daya Karo Nanak Gun
Students ranged in age from as young as 3 years old to elderly participants, all of whom confidently faced the mic during the performance. At Anahad Music Academy, it is a tradition for music class students to perform on Sikh religious occasions. These events serve as a meaningful way for Sikh students to connect with their heritage, and for non-Sikh students, they provide valuable cultural exposure and understanding through the music classes.
